Dr
Stoodley completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland
in 1987. His advanced training in neurosurgery was at the Sir Charles
Gairdner Hospital in Perth and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He
completed subspecialty training in neurovascular surgery at the
University of Chicago and Stanford University. After working as
a volunteer neurosurgeon in Kathmandu, Nepal, he returned to Australia
in 1999. Dr Stoodley has had an active interest in research throughout
his medical career. He completed a research degree while at the
University of Queensland and then a PhD at the University of Adelaide.
During his subspecialty training at the University of Chicago he
developed expertise in molecular and gene therapy aspects of arteriovenous
malformations and continues this research in his laboratory at
the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute. An additional research
and clinical interest is in the pathophysiology of syringomyelia
and Chiari malformations. Dr Stoodley’s current appointments
are Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales and
Head of Neurovascular Surgery for the South East Sydney and Illawarra
Area Health Service.
